TV Girl: French Exit Vinyl LP
TV Girl’s 2014 debut! During the height of chillwave, Brad Petering and Trung Ngo emerged from San Diego with a trilogy of self-described "hypnotic pop" EPs - TV Girl, Benny and the Jetts, and Lonely Women - as well as The Wild, The Innocent, The TV Shuffle mixtape. As the chillwave movement began to fade, Petering relocated to Los Angeles, where he began work alone on TV Girl’s full-length debut, French Exit. The result is a dazzling concoction of retro samples overtop breaks, on which Petering ponders over romantic relationships, both former and hypothetical. The insanely catchy “Birds Don’t Sing” sees Petering lament over a breakup and his fear of goodbyes. “Hate Yourself,” a song about fleeting flings and low self esteem, juxtaposes its darker message with an upbeat piano motif and clangorous cowbells. Penultimate track “Come When You Call” recalls the sonic pallets of Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion and Vampire Weekend’s Contra while romanticizing late night poor decisions.
