Detroit four-piece Protomartyr channel the chugging motorik rhythm and dark atmosphere of UK post-punk acts Wire, The Fall and The Pop Group (who recently collaborated with the band for a live 40th anniversary celebration of Rough Trade Records), filtered through a greasy spigot of homegrown Motor City proto-punk. Relatives In Descent, their Domino debut, absorbs these influences plus a dose of The Raincoats and Mica Levi for good measure, resulting in a deadly serious record that addresses “the unknowable nature of truth and the existential dread that often accompanies that unknowing.” Highlights include “The Chuckler,” “My Children,” “Night-Blooming Cereus” and “A Private Understanding.” This indie-exclusive pressing on blue colored vinyl includes a giant fold-out poster, 24-page zine and code for digital download.
