Black Moth Super Rainbow: Panic Blooms (Pink Colored Vinyl) Vinyl 2LP
File under: āLiquid Goth.āĀ Black Moth Super Rainbowās unique brand of neo-psychedelia somehow manages to sound eerily familiar yet completely unlike anything else at the same time⦠perhaps itās their affinity for lo-fi recording, analog synths, tape loops and singular deployment of druggy tropes. Something akin toĀ Boards Of CanadaĀ if they had the balls to sing through a vocoder and werenāt tooĀ posh to sleep on floors and play scuzzy house shows, but slightly more focused and less haphazard than theĀ TobaccoĀ solo stuff.Ā Panic BloomsĀ is just as fun as any otherĀ Black Moth Super RainbowĀ record, but thereās something more creepy than usual coursing through the veins of these tracks⦠as if the collaged face on the album cover is smiling because heāsĀ keeping a sinister secret none of us are really prepared to hear. There typically arenāt any overtly human sounds found onĀ BMSRĀ records (although thereās a nice little bit of acoustic guitar tucked away on āTo The Beat Of A Creeperā), and sometimes itās easy to forgetĀ there's a group of living, breathing human beings hiding behind the heap of synth cables, drum machine circuitry and vocoder hose. Still, thereās a tremendous amount of humanity in some of these songs⦠like the wobbly R&B vocal melody on āPermanent Hole,ā or the heartbroken despair shining through the cracks of album closer āMr. No Oneā (previously issued onĀ a blink-and-youāll-miss-it 7-inchĀ a few months ago backed with an exceptionalĀ Ariel PinkĀ +Ā TobaccoĀ collab). Other highlights: āNew Breeze,ā āBottomless Face,ā āPanic Bloomsā and āSunset Curses.ā 16 tracks total, pressed onĀ pink double vinyl with custom silkscreened print on side D and code for digital download, released byĀ Rad Cult. Recommended.
