Allah-Las: Calico Review (Indie Exclusive Colored Vinyl) Vinyl LP

The third album from ‘60s revivalists Allah-Las stays true to the band's penchant for playful psych/surf/garage rock. Recorded at the historic Valentine Recording Studio, the quartet used the same equipment (including a 1964 Universal Audio 610 soundboard) as The Beach Boys did for recording Pet Sounds, and consequently, the nostalgia-inducing, analog warmth is at the heart of Calico Review. Check out the upbeat “Could Be You” or the reverb-dipped “Strange Heat.” “Warmed Kipper,” "Famous Phone Figure,” “Autumn Dawn,” and “Place In The Sun” are other standouts, but really, the breezy, laidback/beachside vibe of the 12-tracker makes for a pleasant listen from beginning to end.
